Surface Treatment Research Center works for new product R&D, technical service and maintenance. This role can make customer's relief and reliability, furthermore our strength at product process. This institution was established and started operation in January 2007




Originally, the laboratory was established as Technology Department next to our headquarter. Surface Treatment Research Center was established as functional expansion at present location. There, 1 large oven, 10 small ovens and spraying material production equipments are included. Further, SEMs and other types of measuring devices such as elementary analysis equipment are in place for performance evaluation and coating film analysis, making up a faultless framework. Our large application equipment, which was previously used in combination with our production plant, has now been made exclusive, which has greatly shortened development periods. In the future, we intend to address existing issues such as heavy metal pollution prevention, improving washability, and static electricity prevention, while also increasing the number of researchers, to elevate our technological development abilities in order to respond to the increasingly high precision and high purity expectations from each industrial field.


Swift collaboration with sales and production

The surface treatment technology lab conducts various aspects of its activities in collaboration with the sales department and the production department. For the emerging needs our customers hold regarding various different problems, we provide customers with sample items before they make their order, to allow them to use the item in their actual conditions for use. The sample items are analyzed using special devices for that purpose, and the results of the analysis are reported to the customer. This allows our customers to select the most appropriate product for their use. Depending on the customer's requirements, we have also developed new products especially for the customer on many occasions in the past.


Fully-equipped facilities

Nippon Fusso has wide variety of research equipment and analysis instruments. These allow us to respond quickly and accurately to our customer requests.


Electric operation oven

This is equipment for the heat treatment of fluoropolymer and other materials. It can reach temperatures of up to 500 deg.C. 8 ovens are used for new product development and improvement of existing coating applications. This equipment is most frequently used.

   

Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) equipment

With SEMs, electron rays are irradiated onto the test sample's surface, and the secondary electrons emitted from the irradiated part provide surface imaging. The benefits of SEMs lie in the fact that their depth of focus is more than 100 times greater than optical microscopes. This allows us to obtain images where the focus was on a wide area, and to gain a thorough understanding of the detailed composition of the surface.

The elements from the areas irradiated by electron rays also produce fluorescence X-ray. The energy from the fluorescence X-ray is determined by the element, therefore analyzing the fluorescence X-ray produced can enable us to analyze the elements included in the irradiated parts. This method of analysis is called EDX. Using EDX allows us to obtain the element distribution (mapping). By optimizing the analysis conditions, we can also analyze organic films, the mainstay object our company handles.

   

Fourier transformation type infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR)

This refers to the method in which infrared radiation is performed on the substance to be measured, and transmitted (or reflected) light is dispersed to produce a spectrum, in order to find out the properties of the substance in question. It is used to investigate the molecular structure and condition of the substance. At Nippon Fusso, we use a specific absorption band originating from organic compounds, to examine the identity or reaction status of unknown test samples, and to address problems in the manufacturing process or develop new products.

   

Blasting machines

With these machines, alumina is sprayed onto the surface to remove any dirt and to roughen the surface as a pretreatment for spraying items. 1800×1800×1800 in size, and blasting treatment can be performed from inside as well as outside.

   

Thermal gravimetric/differential thermal analyzer (TG-DTA)

Changes in state and chemical reactions occur in line with the change in temperature when substances are heated, and their weight changes depending on evaporation or chemical reactions due to heat absorption or release. These changes and the difference in temperature from the control substance are measured, and the glass transition points and fusing points for the substance are investigated, as well as the decomposition temperature, weight change, and other aspects.

   

Gas oven

This is used for producing medium volume samples for newly developed grades. The interior is 2100×2400×3500 in size, making it capable of curing large parent materials without any problems.

   

Powder spray booth

This is used when conducting electrostatic powder coating. It is 3000×2000×3000 in size, making it capable of holding relatively large items for coating. It is used frequently in the lab as well.

   

Microscopes

Items are observed via CCD cameras, to display unevenness not visible with an optical microscope. Depending on the apparatus's functions, photographs of the item can be taken, and measurements for distance or area recorded. Changing the lens allows a magnification of 15 to be increased to up to 3000. They are used to observe cross sections of film, and to examine abnormal areas.
